What can I offer?
Qualified Specialist Maths Teaching
I am a fully qualified teacher (QTS), with a specialised Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in mathematics teaching and have years of experience in how to successfully engage with school-age pupils in order to make high progress in maths.
I specialised my PGCE in mathematics teaching and did not take mathematics as a 'second teaching subject' (for example as some non-specialist teachers do).
I have very extensive school-based proven maths teaching skills and experience since 2010, and have helped hundreds of pupils make excellent progress in maths.
I have also successfully shared my skills and knowledge to help many other less experienced teachers to improve their own teaching skills. For example, I have mentored and helped tutor over 20 new trainee (ITT and ECT) secondary maths teachers over a 10 year period.
I have more recently coached and supported other less experienced primary and secondary maths teachers in improving their mathematical teaching skills as part of his Professional Development Lead role for the National Centre for the Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).
Tutoring Experience
Since 2010, I have taught as a fully qualified, specialist GCSE maths and statistics teacher, Key Stage 3 maths coordinator, Lead Maths Practitioner, Professional and Academic School Mentor and more recently an accreditation Professional Development Lead for the NCETM.
This includes 10 years teaching GCSE mathematics and statistics at The Westgate All-through primary and secondary School, one of Hampshire’s highest performing schools, helping them to gain a top progress and attainment position in the whole of Hampshire.
I have a proven track record of helping many students gain top grades 8 and 9 in GCSE mathematics over many years. As well as supporting pupils needing to make progress and obtain a pass at grade 4 or 5 via a whole class, one-to-one or small maths groups,
I have also tutored several primary pupils from Key Stage 1 and 2.
More recently I have also had successful experience of tutoring students for 11+/13+/common-entrance exams for entry into some of Hampshire’s public schools.
And have led and delivered teacher training, mentor and tuition support for trainee and ECT (newly qualified) teachers at several Hampshire schools
No Distractions
I currently work exclusively devoted as a professional maths tutor, allowing me to fully focus on supporting and tutoring my tutees, without the distraction of other competing school teaching activities or university studies.

I don't get it...yet!
I am a firm believer that pupils' mathematical 'ability' is not fixed, and that given enough time and support all learners can progress in mathematics.
Most of us will have probably experienced being taught by a teacher who is qualified in maths, but unfortunately they were poor at teaching maths - particularly teaching school-age pupils.
Anyone can try tutoring maths, but not many meet the legal national Qualified Teacher Standard (QTS), have a specialised PGCE in mathematics and have years of experience in how to successfully engage with school-age pupils in order to achieve higher progress or grades.
I have proven experience in tailoring and adapting all my lessons and homework around the needs and current skills of my students.
I work hard to build confidence and resilience with all of my students, using my experience of supporting and inspiring young people to develop a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Part of my approach is to occasionally share relevant real-world examples of maths from my previous Chartered Design Engineer experience, where I worked on many real maths-based design problems. After a time as a business product manager, I moved into teaching young people, in order to share my experience and passion of maths in the real world, not just to pass exams.
I use a blend of proven traditional and evidence-based modern mastery techniques to ensure that my students maximise their learning.

I have proven extensive teaching and tutoring experience in preparing and supporting hundreds of pupils in their preparation for important maths GCSEs both at a Foundation and Higher level. Additionally I have a successful track record of supporting pupils passing
common entrance exams.
Pupils may, through no fault of their own, have 'gaps' in their maths skills and knowledge. Sometimes through being absent from school, low quality teaching or not gaining enough support in a busy classroom.
As a qualified and very experienced primary and secondary maths specialist teacher, I can quickly identify students’ problem areas and work with them in positive, constructive ways to achieve success. I design my lessons according to my students’ needs, with an emphasis on confidence-boosting activities. With many 'I get it now!' moments.
